Softball Sweeps Methodist on the Road

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Ferrum College picked up a non-conference softball sweep over Methodist University this afternoon on the road, taking the opener 6-4 and winning the nightcap 14-6 in six innings at Price Field.

THE BASICS
Ashton Lambeth pitched six innings to get the win in game one, improving to 2-0 this far on the mound. Carly Nelson's RBI single scored Bayley Cunningham in the second inning. Methodist answered with Heather Tsapp's solo homer in the bottom half of the frame, then scored two in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 3-1 lead.

Ferrum exploded for four runs in the fifth inning, including two on Allison McGehee's RBI double to center field to make it a 5-3 Ferrum lead. Arielle Eure scored in the sixth for the Panthers on Lyndsey Sears' single followed by a throwing error and lead from 6-3 Ferrum. Sarah Davis' RBI single to left center pushed the final run across the plate.

The score was tied 3-3 after an inning in the nightcap, then Hamlett reached on a fielders choice in the second, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-3 game. Ferrum scored two more in the fourth inning when Allison McGehee reached on a fielders choice and drove in Eure and Hamlett. The Monarchs scored two in the bottom half of the frame to make it 6-5.

The Panthers scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning, including two on Tori Scott's RBI double to right field, then added three in the sixth with Sear driving in two runs with an RBI single to center and the lead was 14-5. Methodist managed a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the game was halted after six innings due to the eight-run rule. Sears earned her second pitching win in as many starts, striking out four in six innings of work.

Junior shortstop Keri Hamlett stole five bases in the nightcap, breaking Ferrum's 15-year-old school record for single game stolen bases, set by Mary Greenway with four against Mary Baldwin College on March 9, 2005.
