Baseball Sweeps Alfred State at Home

FERRUM, Virginia -- Ferrum College picked up both ends of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at home against Alfred State College, winning the opener 11-3 and the nightcap 10-9.

Ferrum led 3-2 after an inning and 4-3 after three full frames. The Panthers exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to blow the game open, including Ben Thomas' two-run homer to left center.

Davis Yeaman sent a solo shot over the left field fence just inside the foul pole in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 10-3. Ferrum tacked on a run in the eighth for the final count.

Ferrum trailed 9-3 through six and a half innings before staging a rally, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh, four in the eighth and two in the ninth to complete the comeback.

The Panthers closed the gap to 9-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, with Justin Brady doubling to left center to start things off. Brady advanced to third on Bryce Thacker's sacrifice bunt, then scored on Dylan Sereno's RBI single up the middle to make it a 9-9 game. Ozzie Torres then mashed a 2-2 pitch to left center and Greyson Chitwood motored around from first to score the game-winning run.

Coach Ryan Brittle's team will face Alfred State again on Sunday, February 20, in a single nine-inning game, starting at noon.
