FERRUM, Va. -- James Smith Jr. hit a shot in the waning seconds of the game to lift Ferrum College to a 67-66 non-conference men's basketball win over Averett University tonight at Swartz Gym.
Michael Spraggins' tip-in at 14:03 of the first half gave Ferrum a 13-point lead, 18-5, but the Cougars stormed back and took a 36-35 lead at the break.
The two teams played pretty even in the second half. Averett's Carey Baldwin, who led all scorers with 24 points, hit a three-pointer with 2:05 left in the game to give the Cougars a 66-65 lead.
Smith then drove the lane and sent a floater up high off the glass and in for the game-winning shot with 10.4 seconds left in regulation. The Cougars could not convert a last-second attempt and the Panthers held on for the win.
Coach Tyler Sanborn's squad will be back in action Saturday, November 20, at Mary Baldwin University. The non-conference game is set for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off in Staunton, Virginia.
